Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

What is musculoskeletal ultrasound?

Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high frequency sound waves to create real-time images of soft tissues.  Unlike X-rays, it helps us assess the structures that often cause pain and lameness but don’t show up on bone imaging.

Why is musculoskeletal ultrasound useful for treating pets?

Ultrasound can help us:

  • Spot tendon/ligament injuries and muscle tears
  • Track healing over time
  • Guide injections or regenerative treatments accurately
  • Adjust rehab plans based on what we can see changing

What to expect

In many cases, MSK ultrasound can be conducted with you in a normal appointment.  However, there are times when it will be necessary to lightly sedate your pet to allow us to position them correctly to obtain the best image.  If this is the case, we would need to admit them for a longer period so they can be monitored during and after their sedation.

Your pet will be positioned comfortably, the fur clipped and gel applied to the area being scanned, and a handheld probe is moved over the area while we view the images live.  All images obtained will be discussed with you, and a treatment plan will be made before you leave.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound at STAR Rehab Referrals provides a clear picture of your pet’s recovery — helping us see progress, guide treatment, and keep healing on track.
